At His Feet — The Highest Place
At the feet of Jesus is the highest place we can ever occupy. Scripture reminds us that Mary “sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what He said”, and Jesus declared that she had chosen “the better portion, which will not be taken away from her” (Luke 10:39, 42). There is no greater blessing and no higher honour than abiding with Him.
Jesus calls us not merely to work for Him, but to abide — to remain and to live our daily lives in conscious union with Him. “Abide in Me, and I in you… apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:4–5). Fruitfulness in God’s kingdom flows from intimacy, not activity.
Our so‑called “big projects” do not impress the Lord if they are not born out of a loving relationship with Him. God does not measure as we do; “The Lord does not look at the things people look at… the Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7). Even our achievements for God cannot replace being with Him.
The Lord is not asking first for our service, but for our hearts. He desires love before labour. Service that is grudging, pressured, or driven by comparison is never born of grace. Scripture calls such striving dead works, from which Christ cleanses us “so that we may serve the living God” (Hebrews 9:14).
When we first receive His grace, our service becomes joyful and sincere. “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7), and this is true not only of our resources, but of our time, energy, and obedience. True worship is the yielding of ourselves to Him — “present your bodies as a living sacrifice” (Romans 12:1).
Let us choose again, the better portion. Let us sit at His feet, receive His love, and then serve — not to earn His pleasure, but because we already have it.
Meditation
Take a few moments to be still before the Lord. You may wish to read John 15:4–5 slowly and prayerfully.
Ask yourself:
Am I more focused on doing things for Jesus than being with Him?
What currently motivates my service — love, duty, pressure, or comparison?
Where might the Lord be inviting me to return to His feet?
Gently offer your heart to the Lord.
Surrender any striving, weariness, or self‑effort to Him.
Ask the Holy Spirit to renew your joy in abiding.
You may want to sit quietly for a while, and repeat softly in your heart: “Jesus, I choose the better portion.”
Prayer
Dear Lord, please help me to yield fully to You and give You my whole heart. Deliver me from dead works and self‑effort, and cleanse my service by Your grace.
Teach me to serve You sincerely and with cheerfulness, according to the grace You have given me. Help me not to compare myself with others, but to remain grateful and faithful with what You have entrusted to me.
Let my life be lived from love, not obligation — from intimacy, not performance. Thank You, Lord. Amen.
